GMA News reporters Darlene Cay and Lei Alviz have taken on the LIGHT IT FORWARD challenge, a campaign to honor the frontliners by hand-building solar lamps for the energy-poor villages in the country.

The Liter of Light’s award-winning Light it Forward challenge is a video series of solar ambassadors who participate in the solar lighting movement – challenging one after another until the aim to provide a light source to unreached areas in the Philippines has been achieved.

The provision of sustainable lamps to the country’s poor benefits also our brave frontliners as solar advocates dedicate their hand-built lamp to them.

The Light it Forward challenge that aims to change the world takes up only 20-30 minutes for the assembly process while staying at the comforts of home.

Social influencers and ordinary people alike have the power to bring light to others like reporters Darlene Cay and Lei Alviz.

Darlene Cay

Darlene is a seasoned Journalist who currently works at GMA network.

She was challenged by her fellow GMA reporter Mav Gonzales and started off the assembly process with a quick background of the campaign.

“It aims to spread awareness and also provide solar lamps for the millions of Filipinos that until now, have no access to electricity,” Cay explained.

The Kapuso reporter honestly shared that she is not very confident with the challenge but with the tutorial video she watched and with the provided instruction manual by Liter of Light, she tried her best to achieve the goal.

As Cay moved on with her assembly, she sought help from another fellow reporter Saleema Refran and even though was faced with a few failures the journalist managed to succeed and rejoiced over her achievement.

Darlene shared that the hand-built solar lamp will go to the coffee farming communities that have no access to electricity.

The journalist also expressed her realization over the things we take for granted especially in this time of pandemic like our basic necessity – electricity.

She went on to share the importance of helping others in whatever means possible and encouraged everyone to visit the Liter of Light website and join the noble cause of bringing light to others.

Cay passed on the Light it Forward challenge to other news reporters – Tina Panganiban Perez, Katrina Son, Corinne Catibayan, and Isay Reyes.

Lei Alviz

Lei Alviz is a senior reporter of GMA 7. She was challenged by her colleague and good friend Bernadette Reyes to LIGHT IT FORWARD.

Alviz explained that after assembling the light kit, it will be sent to remote areas in the PH that are lacking or have no access to electricity.

After a few lighting attempts, the senior reporter successfully lit the lamp and flashed on the screen the functions and benefits of the solar bottle along with a description of the Liter of Light Foundation.

Lei encouraged others to contact the Filipino organization for donations or participate in the challenge.

She passed on the Light it Forward challenge to Raffy Tima, Steve Dailisan, Ali Peek, JP Soriano, and Nelson Canlas.
