Filipino social innovator Illac Diaz of the Liter of Light Foundation has been named the PropertyGuru Tech Innovation Award’s Visionary of the Year for his game-changing works.

Climate hero Illac Diaz was awarded the PropertyGuru Visionary of the Year title on December 3, 2020, for the Liter of Light’s “use of humanitarian tech (which) has been a shining beacon for affordable homes in developing countries.”

The PropertyGuru Tech Innovation Award given during the Asia Real Estate Summit honored Diaz for his “rewarding game-changing, impactful ideas in the real estate and property sectors.”

Illac Diaz and the Liter of Light team have developed a cheap and long-lasting solar lamp that has illuminated the homes of remote communities still without electricity – not only in the Philippines but around the world, notably through the Voyage of Light on the Peace Boat.

The Filipino social enterprise’s Light it Forward campaign during the Covid-19 pandemic challenged people while in quarantine at home to hand-build the solar lamps for donation to communities. The campaign won the Asia Pacific Social Innovation and Partnership Award.

On Andres Bonifacio Day, November 30, the Liter of Light brought together the 3,000 solar lamps to Rizal Park in Manila and created the giant solar display of the Philippine flag to honor Filipino health workers as modern-day heroes of the pandemic. The solar artwork is a continuation of an earlier campaign with Good News Pilipinas called the Good Light Message of Hope that lit up inspirational messages using the solar lamps.

Illac Diaz has also been hailed an ASEAN Champion and won an Edison Award from New York.
